Santa Claus Comes to Cooke City

Winter events have started again - and they couldn't have come any sooner!  The last two months were painfully slow, other than my trip to Atlanta.  They are the off seasons here, when all the businesses close, the locals go on vacation, no tourists come through, and if you're lucky you'll see a dog wandering the streets.  In the last week, however, life has started again!  We decorated the chapel for Christmas last Friday (pictures to come), there have been business open houses, dinner nights, and a bonfire!  The bonfire was especially important because the invite came from a local I barely know.  The implicit message i got from the invite was: Round Two and I'm IN!!  Just tonight I went to an Avalanche Awareness seminar.  That was a first!

One of the most anticipated events, at least by the children in town, all nine of them, is Santa's visit!  Every year the kids, their parents, and other community members get together for a pancake and bacon breakfast, after which the kids are distracted by yearly toys and activities.  During their distraction, low and behold, Santa appears!  They go through the line, sitting on Santa's lap, telling him what they want for Christmas, and then, before they are able to spend too much time with Santa and start to recognize his voice, he scurries off to his next appointment!  He has to go check on the reindeer he left at the edge of town because they would be too scared of the snowmobiles.  So adorable.

There is one 4th grader, three 3rd graders, 2 preschoolers, a three year old, and two babies.  Here are some of the kids singing a special song as they await Santa's arrival.
