I don't remember my last Thankgsiving celebration at home in Minnesota. It was six years ago now. Since then I've celebrated in Karaganda, Kazakhstan (remember this picture?!); Providence, Rhode Island; Beverly, Mass.; Rockport, Mass.; and now on Colter Pass of Cooke City, Montana!
It was a wonderful Thanksgiving 2009, filled with more good food than I have seen in a LONG time! A husband and wife from the church graciously invited me to their house located up on Colter Pass, essentially two miles or so past Cooke City on the "closed" road. It will most likely be closed for real in a week to vehicles, but right now if you have four-wheel drive you can power your way up there. After next week, this couple, as well as others who live up there, will have to snowmobile (or "snowmachine" as people out here say) both directions to get anywhere - either into Cooke City (2 miles) where their vehicle sits waiting for them to drive to Bozeman, MT or the other direction to Pilot Creek parking lot (10 miles) where their vehicle sits all winter waiting for them to drive to Cody, WY! People lead strange and unusual lives up here!
While Kazakhstan was a very unique place to celebrate Thanksgiving, Colter Pass, MT (not a town, just a point on a road in the mountains!) was the most unique place I've ever celebrated the holiday in America; and thanks to this couple from the church, it was a wonderful Thanksgiving 2009!
This picture is of Donna holding not dinner rolls, but the marshmallows on top of the sweet potatoes! An unexpected surprise!
