Returning to “God’s country” is always a joy. This is true, in part, because of the people there and, in part, because of the country itself. Now that I am in Spokane, I am not sure what will happen with this blog. But until I figure that out, here are some photos of a recent hike on the Beartooth Plateau, with one of the greatest hiking partners a person could have, Mother Mary.
Here’s the view just below Sheepherder Lake, looking up at the Plateau.
This is the view that awaited us on the other side of the Plateau.
Looking down into the Rock Creek Canyon and at the Beartooth Highway (Red Lodge side) switchbacks.
Incredible.
Here the canyon has turned, but you can still see the Rock Creek road in the lower right corner. The lakes are Emerald, Lower Glacier, and Glacier. To the upper right of the lakes is Spirit Mountain, with the Bear’s Tooth hidden in the background.
While on top of the world we encountered a herd of 15(!) mountain goats, one of which was a little-too-curious-for-comfort. He came within ten feet of me before deciding I wasn’t worth much to him… thankfully.
The goats let me stalk them for the next hour or so, not caring that I was within 25-40ft. of them the whole time.
Do the Beartooth Mountains get any better than this?
On the other side of the Plateau was this view. Not bad at all.
