Canada, Scotland, England, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Poland, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, France, and now Wales. As of last Wednesday, when I arrived back in the UK, I have now been to 26 countries, not including the US. For the last five days I’ve been in Wales—land of Tom Jones, Anthony Hopkins, Christian Bale…
…and Gladstone’s Library, a residential library in Northern Wales which houses a number of random biblical and theological books, among others. People come here from all over, not so much for the library, which in itself is quite small, but for the peaceful environment it provides for writers of all guilds. The residents share meals together in the dining hall and spend time working on their personal research and writing endeavors throughout the day.
I am lucky enough to be one of the student scholarship recipients, which means I’ve been given bed, breakfast and dinner at the library for a week. I came here after flying into Manchester from Minnesota last week and, sadly, will be leaving in only a couple of days.
It’s been a wonderful week of sitting in the inspiring library, doing the work I was meant to do over Christmas. These things happen.
